TOMATOES AND LEMONS

First tomatoes will be picked tomorrow 14 July which seems a bit late? With the cost I think I will just need a handful per plant to break even as I have sold £10 worth which pays for the seed and pots., Just picked cucumber number 3 which may be it?

Box of Leons has arrived from Spain. So lemon recipes.

Lemon basil drink.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 2 cups water
  • 3 tablespoons pure maple syrup
  • 4 fresh basil leaves (roughly 1 tablespoon minced)
  • Combine the lemon juice, water, maple syrup, and basil leaves in a blender, and blend until the basil is completely broken down. No need to strain! (If your basil leaves are particularly large, start with just 2 leaves, and add more to taste.) 
  • Serve over ice right away, or store it in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 3 days

A SUMMER DRINK

I was given out of date lime and lemons by the shop. I have lots of mints, so I thought I would have a go at something. Mints:apple lemon verbena and lemon balm, Bowles M, pineapple m, ginger m, chocolate m, Spanish m, Atlas Mt.M. Some ginger and lots of fresh lime and lemon juice and some honey. Not bad. I think with ice lemon and thin slices of apple? And maybe vodka or gin?

  •  zest of 6 large lemons (you are going to strain it later so keeping the zest in large pieces is preferable – I do this by using a potato peeler to remove it from the lemons.)
  • 500g sugar
  • 500ml lemon juice (around 10 lemons depending on size and volume of juice)
  • 500ml water
  • 40 large mint leaves ripped into pieces

I like my mint to be a subtle undertone so perhaps half this amount.

OLIVE STICKS

Recipe is as follows but I will just make with 200g flour and 125ml water and other bits halved

  • 450g bread flour
  • 2 tsp dried instant yeast
  • 1 tsp caster sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 300ml warm water
  • 3 tbsp olive oil
  • 80g green or black olives (halved)
  • 80g cheddar cheese (cut into small cubes)
  • Extra olive oil for greasing
  • Extra flour for dusting
  • Semolina flour for dusting (optional) 
  • Options, ground pepper/sun dried toms/garlic (just for flavour/thyme/ smoked paprika pinch.

I added all the options !- excellent dipped in tzatziki .

FARCE

It gets more ridiculous by the minute. Dorries for PM? Jenkyns for any Education Minister, Schapps for PM, Sunak to sort out economy. Please stop it – it is beyond parody. Give us a general election now that it is generally agreed that Brexit has been the biggest fuck up since WW1. Oh how I laughed when Portillo lost his seat (I quite like his TV shows on the railways now!) but this time I think I would need to adjust sleep pattern so I could stay up all night to watch the rats being voted out.

CHAOS

My word for today. Johnson remains for the present – he does not own a house or a car as he has been sponging off the public purse for so long. How long people will put up with this farce is debatable. BJBJ is hoping until the autumn at least, by which time some event may rescue him – although I think the number of resignations tells a story.

Meanwhile the workforce in the UK has shrunk by 1.2% since the pandemic – more than population change; UK trade falling behind France and Germany; Taxes rising; Inflation approaching 10%; R&D lagging behind France and Germany; Bottom of G7 economic growth; public freedoms eroded; international status plummeting except in Ukraine; NHS underfunded; public sector workers underfunded; strikes increasing; cost of living rising; bankers bonus payments and directors pay rising; child poverty increasing. WELL DONE THIS TORY GOVERNMENT AND ALL WHO SUPPORTED IT (until some found a conscience to late to really matter – the damage is done.

And all the indicators of climate change are INCREASING whilst BJBJ sweats on his own future – hopefully still housed at Her Majesties Pleasure!

GARDEN – 8 July 2022

First tomato starting to blush – hopefully by Monday the stream should start. Raspberries and Loganberries are also making a break for freedom. Temperatures are above 20C for next week at least so that should help the harvest.

Front garden is a happy chaos. Cornflowers, chicory flowers, marigold, vetch, Californian poppy, evening primrose, night scented stock, nasturtium, fennel, sage flowers, different types of lavender in flower, but few bees, butterflies, etc. All growing alongside the 30 pots of thymes and mints, oregano and verbena and golden verbena. All growing in chaos – no colour co-ordination, many self seeded and growing as nature intended (apart from the pots to keep mints under control.
