PLANTS

Planted dahlia and gladioli today and lots of smaller bulbs to go in later – not sure where?

Greenhouse sorted for seeds with 120 pots laid out, and 4 trays for the shelves. First in are going to be scabious, 3 poppy types, cornflower and sunflower, salvia, Geum, echinacea and cosmos. Making a shopping list for tomorrows trip to Banwell Garden Centre!

Hopefully they will be ready to go out before tomatoes arrive. Too windy today for outside?

Also thinking about pots on patio – Californian poppies, night scented stock. Maybe Himalayan poppy for the first year? Where to put sweet peas? Maybe a wigwam? Very windy so putting off planting out bulbs for today.

I think also one courgette plant at the back of the garage, and one/two cucumbers for end of greenhouse. And maybe the best red pepper plant and grow like a tomato plant in pot in greenhouse with some chillies which I guess will go in the conservatory?

COVID STATS

I am going to leave it until Monday. At the moment the stats are generally down by 10%, but this is not enough to bring figures to levels where we can relax. I reckon about 80% reduction is needed, back to last Septembers figures. That means places like Cornwall having less than 20 / 100000, and then accepting the problems with cities, a graduation up to say 50 in cities like Manchester, Birmingham and Liverpool.

RECIPES – Cherry tomatoes, feta and pasta

How to make baked feta pasta

  • Using a baking dish safe for the oven, add the tomatoes, olive oil, salt and pepper and mix to combine.
  • Add the block of feta cheese to the center of the baking dish, and either flip it around a couple times to coat it with the olive oil and seasoning, or just add a touch more olive oil and a couple cracks of fresh black pepper.
  • Bake it in the oven until the tomatoes burst and the feta looks melted (and your house smells heavenly!)
  • As soon as it comes out of the oven, add some fresh minced garlic and fresh basil leaves.
  • Mix it around immediately so that the garlic softens from the heat in the dish.
  • Add cooked pasta on top and give everything a stir. The feta and tomatoes will essentially create a sauce for the pasta.

WHAT THE TORIES TAUGHT US?

Like the tv programme about the Romans!

Looking after your cronies is more important than the country; Never admit you were wrong; BAME lives matter less; There is a money tree (for some); Lies are allowed; Money is more important than lives;

ARGUMENTS

In the age of the internet we can always find someone to agree with our take on issues. This leads to a polarisation of attitudes into right and wrong aspects.

GEOGRAPHY OF COVID

Fascinating stuff. Apparently the first deaths in Europe were just 4 weeks after the first in Asia and then another 2 weeks to get to USA and another 2 to Africa.

I know we should be careful regarding the statistics for some African countries, but there does seem to have been an absence of the devastation caused in e.g. New York; Manaus, Brazil and Peru where bodies were stacked up. Why this should be is a puzzle? Why should countries with advanced medical services struggle most? Is it a societal thing – the ‘Robin Hood Syndrome’. There is probably more interaction between individuals in the west? But surely not true for the Far East? (e.g.Japan). I guess the reasons for differences between countries will be studied for years!

Minority groups, whether strict Jews in Israel or BAME communities in this country have certain things in common. Firstly they have a higher death rate from Covid (social and economic reasons?), and they are less likely to take up the vaccines offered. T~his last one is more difficult to understand – especially when we read of health workers refusing the vaccine. What is it, no I will start that sentence again, How sad that these communities have so lost faith in the government.
