STRIKES

Discussing this with a local shop worker who is on the minimum wage despite starting 3 days a week at 5.30am, and does put in extra, unpaid duties when required; I asked why she did not ask for a rise – she said she was told that she could go and get a job at McDonalds. This is the way we treat our workers I the UK. She also gets no sick pay as she does not work enough hours and has also not been told what her statutory holiday pay is. Joining a union is pointless on a part time 3 day a week.

All power to the workers in the new year. Will 2023 bring a General Election? My predictions start here.

  1. Weather and climate – more disasters around the world. Will we have floods in February as possibly predicted by La NiƱa? Almost certainly we will have a heat wave at some time.
  2. Strikes will continue in the Public Sector, private sector pay is rising in line with/ near inflation. Government can raise minimum wage with little impact on itself but will be wary of it nearing the wages of some in NHS and Education.
  3. General election calls will increase – Rushi Sunak being undermined by various elements of the Nasty Party. The criminal putting forward as beignet only hope for them.
  4. Sport – no Olympics or World Cup. Boring comes to mind after the excitement of the FIDFA World Cup. Women’s World Cup football is set to take place in Australia and NZ this summer. This could see an explosion in the popularity of the woman’s game – brilliant.
