SURELY NOT IF, BUT WHEN?

If the number of letters handed in reaches 54 he will have to go for re-election, which he has said he will do – boy he must love that wallpaper!! The ensuing contest will be interesting as the Tory Party has fractured somewhat since he was elected. Brexit can no longer be seen as the glue holding it together. The LibDems have demonstrated that no seat is intrinsically safe, even in the shires. The red wall tories are already beginning to panic that they will have to go back to proper jobs. Party Grandees like Davis and Clarke have already put their letters in. The ERG is probably seeing itself as a kingmaker rather than providing a candidate. Sunak has been chasing his words carefully and avoiding as much TV coverage as possible. I guess the Daily Mail and the Telegraph will have a major say – which says much about our democracy, although we are moving away from Murdoch and the Sun. The BBC will be too concerned about its future to be involved in any meaningful way. Sleaze-Dogg will probably consider the job below him as he could do it lying down.

So is it a straight race with Sunak? His austerity plus policies will go down well with traditional tories and rich financial donors. His role in the financial crash will be swept away. Truss is seen to have the right attitude but maybe also seen to not be quite up to the job – but has wisely flown as fas away as possible! So perhaps not so stupid after all. The rest of the cabinet are inexorably linked and entwined in Johnsons web – as Parris said – the bite of Dracula. Apparently Matt Hancock thinks he has a chance – would he be allowed to stand for the leadership from prison? He must be hoping the vote comes before the knock on the door!

I love facts that are not facts! Or at least not in a proper context. UK economy grows fastest – unless compared with pre-covid levels (Growth for a very low base makes it easier). UK vaccination roll out the best in Europe (Earliest maybe – but superseded by many others). UK deaths amongst highest in the world (If we were all counting in the same way this is probably true). Johnson got Brexit done – hmmm – he signed a contract which he now says was not a proper contract and has instructed his minions to disregard it – oh and by the way Brexit is shafting our economy and possibly society.
