On an optimistic note Andy Burnham has published ideas for his future government – and there was not anything to dislike apart from those who hate paying tax and think the world is orientated around them! It was vague in parts but at least built up the hope that things will get better. He did it in Manchester – can he take on the vast vested interests of Westminster, Whitehall and the City of London.
And if you think the UK is chaotic, just glance across the pond, where the Republicans are reeling from an increasingly neorotic President and the lies of his MAGA supporters, the November elections should be a walk in the park for the Democrats despite copious funding for the Republicans from billionaires with greed etched into their souls. However the Democrats are split between the traditionalists and a new wave of urban so called “democratic socialists” led by the Mayor of NY Zohran Mamdami. If America can be grateful for just one thing that Trump has done, he has destroyed the status quo and created room for a better future. However it has yet to be seen that Americans are aware that he has also destroyed the empire and influence that they have enjoyed for the last century. A new world order is developing. China (which has lifted 600 million out of poverty) is now competing in world politics for influence. Putins Russia is on the wane; India has democratic and geographic problems; The Middle East cannot rely on its oil wealth for ever – and the discord its proxies wreak; Africa is still fucked by the colonial powers of the past – and increasingly beholden to China; South America seems to flit between fascism and communism (or parodies of both – tainted by corruption); so that leaves Europe – chaotic and seen by many to be a mess, but the Nation states give it a diversity that many individuals around the globe would see as enviable. Its lack of cohesion is also a strength, and this means that its Parliament is also diverse and has as a main theme – making lives better, not profit for the megalomaniacs of America, or the Party line in China.
