HALF WAY

The half way point of the season and we see Arsenal 8 points clear of ManC. They have the exuberance and the tenacity to carry on but will the behemoth of ManC grind them down – they have to play each other twice. ManU got pulled back at Palace and may yet find that they have not the consistency, or. be over reliant on Rashford. Newcastle are playing above themselves but have a fine manager who has spent well. Spurs seem to under perform at crucial times. Liverpool and Chelsea at 9th and 10th – who would have thought.! Fulham, Brentford and Brighton have been good, and Notts Forest re playing as a team after woeful start. Leeds also look dangerous at times. Which leaves relegation – Everton, WHU, Southampton, Aston Villa, Bournemouth, Wolves and Leics are in bottom 7 and I would expect the bottom 3 to come from them.

So Arsenal have 3 games against Manchester clubs which will determine their season. I do not wish to split them but believe the top two will be Arsenal and ManC. Relegation I see Wolves, and Bournemouth goingg down with possibly WHU or Everton?

REGIONAL AID

That there are areas of the country suffering deprivation is beyond doubt. That some are in Essex and Kent is also well documented. But for 2 rich counties one has to wonder why there was not more self-help?

However the piecemeal approach of governments over time has shown that this is not efficient. Cornwall received £millions from the EU but many of the small dispersed projects failed. Successes are the new road link and the expansion of Universities into the county. Studies have also shown that some deserving councils are too cash strapped to provide staff to create the grant application and staff its implementation. Of 151 local authorities only 8 have not had real term cuts even with the extra funds announced. Levelling up is a nonsense statement. Does the Education Minister talk about levelling up? The first objective should be to provide a minimum level of public services like community centres, swimming pools and libraries. Investment in education in poorer areas would yield dividends for years to come. So an AI centre in Blackpool is welcomed. Whether National Heritage sites should be receiving these funds (rather than from elsewhere) is debatable.

The north appears to be in desperate need of a functional public transport system. The devastation of Thatcherism will not be met by call centres and Amazon warehouses. Decentralisation of government and business away from London will do wonders for the North and Midlands – start with Parliament. Media City in Manchester appears to be a success. I am not sure what went wring with the mega-factory for batteries that has gone bust recently but am informed that the location is ideal, but management were not. London house prices are over inflated so decentralisation makes sense. Instead of Sleaze-Dogg moaning about working from home we should encourage it. Re-nationalise the railways and offer cheap one day a week season tickets for those who need to visit offices occasionally. This will probably hit High Streets and hospitality centres in cities, but so be it. Business rates need to be abolished and replaced by VAT or a separate sales tax so that shops and on-line pay the same costs.

AFU

Is there nothing that is not fucked up in this country? There are 1000 Met Police personnel who are being investigated for sexual offences and domestic violence but the government seems unconcerned. Teachers are joining other workers in strike action. The government is seizing discretionary powers to stop protests (at the discretion of the minister, not the law or the courts). Voting rights are being restricted, especially for the young. The NHS is broken. The Care Home system is broken. The rail system in parts of the country is broken. The right to roam in wild places is being curtailed (admittedly this was a flawed judgement of a judge not government – but the same ilk!). The education system is at breaking point. The court system is broken. The right wing press lowers it standards daily. The BBC has become a government tool. Food inflation was 13.3% in December but 20.3% for budget items. Dairy and bakery products were up between 19-29%.

The government is running out of people to blame. It is now concentrating on stripping democracy from anyone who may, potentially complain in future!

EL NINO

The return of El Niño later this year could mean even greater climate anomalies scientists have warned. The hottest year ever recorded was 2016 – the last El Niño year.

What is means is that the likelihood of the following is exacerbated :- Flooding in the Yangtze River basin,; hotter and drier in areas abutting the Western Pacific; floods in Peru; suppressed monsoons in `India and drought in Southern Africa whilst East Africa and southern USA can get more rain. The Amazon could face drier conditions. For the UK it could mean that 2023-24 is a much colder winter, it is unlikely to have developed before the autumn at the earliest. The Met Office have predicted this summer to be hotter than the last in the UK.

VACCINE DELUSION

I just listened to idiot Neil Oliver. Over 45 million have had a jab and 33 million boosters. All the science shows it to be safe. But forget the science – are you leading a normal life? In this country we seem to be on top of Covid at the moment. Hopefully we can avoid another lockdown. China is interesting because their vaccination rate is much lower and their vaccine may not be as effective if reports of deaths are to be confirmed. There is no doubt in my mind that the first lockdown was absolutely essential, the second was a result of Johnson’s incompetence. The vaccine has prevented further lockdowns.

For my age group it has to be a total no brainer. For middle aged people I would suggest it depends on their job and proximity to those at risk. For younger and children I suspect (with no medical knowledge) that they may have gained natural immunity and unless there is another pandemic would let them get a dose!

I would hope that NHS staff and Care Home staff get a jab as the elderly and infirm are more likely to be at risk from this and flu.

PROTESTS

So the government is to give more powers to the police to prevent protests, it also wants to stop strikes. There is am alternative, take action to increase public sector pay and stop policies which harm society and the environment. With nothing to protest about there would be no protests.

It is odd how papers and organisations that ask if they support or disagree with strikes and protests never ask whether it is fair that CEO’s of FTSE100 companies should have a 44% pay rise?

THIS WEEKEND – 15 JAN 2023

I will start with the shit – Thames Water has been pumping raw sewage from an overflow pipe at Amply St,Peter non-stop since 20th December. Southern Water Pumped shit onto 83 beaches last year. Braverman spouts shit at a holocaust survivor. Johnson paid £4445 for a meal in NY on a Government Credit Card. Tory donor Clipper Logistics were paid £11 million for PPE and are now to be paid £4.5 million to destroy it. Davros is inundated with private jets bring the rich and privileged to their annual talking shop. The Russians are hitting Ukraine with more missiles so Nato countries are providing more tanks. Will this war continue for years? Israel continues to harass Palestine at all levels. Iran continues to execute people for not agreeing with their authoritarian and bigoted regime.

Football

This season is one of the mist interesting for ages. ManC losing at ManU today leans it is close at the top, and if Spurs beat Arsenal it bunches up at the top. Everton and West Ham bottom! Notts Forest climbing. Wolves, Leicester.and Leeds in danger zone along with Bournemouth and Southampton. Lower down, Sunderland lose at home again to mid-table Swansea, Bristol City gain some points against Birmingham whilst Burnley and Sheffield United seem to have the top 2 spots assured with 10 point gap to Watford. Division 1 was to see Plymouth keep the gap at the top with a draw at Ipswich although Sheffield Wednesday cut the lead to 3, the top 3 slots would seem to be between these 3 whilst at the bottom Forest Green Rovers continue to battle at the very bottom. Another draw means they are 3 points from safety with MKDons, Morecambe, Burton, Accrington and Cambridge all fighting to avoid the drop.. Then Div2 where the top three dropped points whilst Colchester moved away from the drop zone. Chelmsford lost on penalties.

And My footie game is also very close with Adam and Aaron swapping the lead. I have been abysmal this week – next week I will shine!

CHEESE BISCUITS

  • 150 g strong cheddar cheese
  • 100 g plain flour
  • 50 g butter I use unsalted
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • 1 egg yolk

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Grate the cheese using the finest cheese grater setting.
  • Put the flour and butter into a food processor and blend just until it has formed a breadcrumb consistency. Then add in the cheese, egg yolk and paprika. Alternatively use your fingers to rub the butter into the flour and then stir in the cheese, egg and paprika.
  • Knead a little with your hands to form an even dough and then wrap in cling film and refrigerate to rest for an hour.
  • Preheat the oven to 180C
  • Sprinkle flour on the work surface and roll out the dough until it is about 2mm thick. Cut out circles with a pastry cutter and place them on a baking tray lined with baking parchment.
  • Bake them in the oven at for 10 minutes. They will puff up a bit. Turn them over and press them down then continue to bake for another 5 minutes.
  •  Cool them on a wire rack.

I might add garlic and basil?

Or this recipe looks good!
