BREAD

Dough rising – I think I will leave overnight. Knead early then bake about 9am? And then some cookies? And some preserved apples, although I am not sure of the point of apples in sugar sauce? Stewed apple made. Last of apples picked.

STUDENTS

If I have got this right students will be given a 6 day window to return to their homes ‘if they test negative’. This seems a bit like a dictatorship to me. Yes provide testing, especially for those returning to homes with vulnerable people. But if a student tests positive will they be forcibly quarantined? This would basically be imprisonment. What about the 80% of the population who are not self-isolating? If my kids were at university at the moment I would get them home now.

I WONDER?

Enough of politics. I sometimes wonder if I am weird. I remember so much weird stuff, and forget much that is important! Have a virtual friend. Have the most vivid dreams that can be really weird! And then the random thoughts. Other people do not seem to have them?

VACCINE NEWS

Pfizer/BioNTech announce that trials of their vaccine are looking very promising. But we will all need to be vigilant in the meantime. It will probably still not be available until early next year. Why could Johnson say this, instead of his relentless hyperbole. There are still many questions about the vaccine but it seems that the current situation will not be permanent. So calm down. A study by King’s College found that only 11% of people who should self isolate are doing so properly.

It is probably too late for the government to appeal for adherence to the rules. Dominic Cummings and Johnson’s dad ensured that the public does not take laws seriously. And is it really true that NHS workers cannot get a test unless they themselves have symptoms? A member of the family/household with symptoms does not count!

AMI

Lets have them here – with Covid people are reluctant to use public transport. And yes, public transport providers, you will need to adapt. So the Citroen Ami.

Would I get one? Possibly? I could hire something if I needed a bigger journey – summer holiday or whatever. Especially if the hire company had a parking/charging space!

We were talking this morning about how phones are at about their limits of capability – this could be the new frontier! Ok, not for knob obsessed petrol heads, but for the growing grey population like me a 2 seater is enough. Everything big can be delivered anyway. With solar panels would cost nothing to run. And at about £7 grand – I want one! The only worry is that 35kph max speed might cause a traffic problem if I drove into Bristol from here? Or maybe not – there are enough passing places, I am not sure people (lots of morons) have accepted that slower does not hurt!

I just checked out prices of car hire -£30 to whatever. But do the maths – having a car costs what £8 grand, tax and insurance at leats a grand with wear and tear. Maybe once or twice a year hire a car for say £500 for a week. No worries about breakdown. So that costs £1000, even double? But your Ami will cost you – lets guess at 5 years so £1200 a year, and virtually nothing for charging (great saving). Servicing should also be simple and cheap as there is little to check! That was messy! Normal car cost – at least £1000 a year, MOT £50, I would guess that insurance is much cheaper. petrol – depends how much you drive, but for most would become negligible.

The range given at 47 miles is a little concern. But charging up, in 3 hours no problem.

But basically I can drive to the shops I use, and get what I want, for virtually no cost! And at a cost of £7 grand – less than I paid for my present car- no brainer.

B.JOHNSON IS NOT LAUGHING ANYMORE

My understanding is that the USA under Biden will not do a trade deal with the UK unless the UK has one with the EU which guarantees the Good Friday Agreement and no border with Ireland (Eire). And whilst he is seen by many as a Trump devotee, Biden is certainly no bosom buddy. Johnsons racist comments about Obama and muslims will not go down well with Biden and his running mate Kamala Harris.

ITALY – DEMOGRAPHCS

Along with many other developed countries the birth rate is falling. Italy’s population is at its lowest for 90 years. Villages are becoming deserted, especially those in hill top positions in remote parts of southern Italy. Test areas are already the poorest in Italy with few job prospects. They are also extremely vulnerable to Covid with many hospitals having been closed.

There are. some parallels with Cornwall where the number of intensive care beds very low. Cornwall is one of the poorest regions in pre-Brexit EU.

BELARUS

We should avoid becoming to insular. Russian influences will pervade here, but Lukashenko’s time might be limited. Belarus may not have the right wing element that exists in other Eastern European countries. Although I doubt that Russia will allow any liberal government.
