COVID-19

There seem to be no foolproof solutions, but a myriad of local ones. That is why Government politicians and civil servants cannot get a grip on it. Edict from Westminster could never work for long, and now not at all as they are not trusted at all. Wales is going for the contact-breaker; hopefully that will work, but will need new thinking for 2/3 weeks time.

Ireland is imposing a 3 mile/5km limit on travel. This seems sensible. Combined with a half decent test, track, isolate scheme properly funded, it should be possible to then re-open pubs and restaurants to those within a 5km radius. I am sure some establishments would still suffer – but life could go on for most. Schools should not be affected unless they have students travelling large distances. Universities would close and go online. Perhaps local schools/halls could be established to enable and promote socialisation and discussion.

Basically it comes back to the failed test and trace systemm. Until that is sorted we are stuck. On this Starmer and the SDP should make a policy decision to reclaim all profits from companies awarded special contracts without competition.

Then the economy. When will the government start to invest in green technology, it would create jobs, and at a time of unemployment, taking people off the dole and social security etc. would offset any investment costs. And looking to the future would probably mean that investment in green technology actually enables us to get the economy on a sustainable footing.
