BEYOND INEPTITUDE!

In a crisis the country needs quick and effective policies. What we have is a scramble to show the least compassion regarding migrants; a U turn on climate change where Sunak has adopted Labour Policy (for the moment); nurses voting for strike action; teachers being balloted for strike action; railways in chaos; energy bills have doubled and may do so again in April; mortgages rising steadily.

What policies have we seen the government come up with? Scrapping EU Laws that protect us and our environment. U turns on “On-line Safety Bill” – now dropped, NI elections. Not so much U turns but a governement spinning like an out of control top – Gavin Williamson writing rude emails, Dorries acting like a wild card spreading dissent. Braverman snarling at every opportunity. I wonder who they will wheel out to justify the unjustifiable and indefensible in tomorrow’s TV slots.

We need a government for the people, of the people: Not just the corrupt Tory Party.

Who is the 10th biggest landowner in the UK? The state of Qatar, and that is without the investments of their Ruling Family. Who owns the Shard, Harrods, hotels in Park Lane and Mayfair? Do you wonder why the Government is keeping quiet about the FIFA World Cup in Qatar and the accusations of slavery, exploitation, homophobia, and bribery to get the damn thing in the first place. Well done Jurgen Clop for speaking out.

COP27

Time has probably run out to prevent major changes in Earth’s ecosystems. The world’s temperatures are already 0.8C warmer than 40 years ago. CO2 emissions continue to rise steadily as does methane. Warmer temperatures also means more water vapour (another greenhouse gas). Rainforest destruction continues steadily. Ice melting in the Arctic results in lower albedo, thus more heat absorption in the oceans which in turns leads to higher sea levels (a process which takes a while to get going, then decades to reverse. Byebye London is not going to happen soon, but may become an inevitability. Whilst the rate of population growth is slowing, it is still growing. World poverty has decreased, but this results in greater consumption and more methane and CO2.

It is not all bad news however. Solar and wind power combined has almost matched coal in creating power. Projections could mean that renewables produce 6x that of coal in the next 30 years. Lithium Battery costs have fallen to 10% of costs 12 years ago.

It seems that we have made good progress in the UK on the easy bit – increasing wind and solar power. With government assistance this could probably double by 2030. More difficult will become the need to reduce transport journeys – electric cars must be made to last, but public transport will need to take people off the roads. Air travel could be by electric planes, but will again need to change to shorter flights. It is the rich who have the greatest proportional impact – private planes should be heavily taxed. Most of the publics holiday flights could be achieved with short hop (2/3 hours) to holiday destinations. People will have to accept that there is a difference between “I need to go to …” and “I would like to go to ..”. Maybe more people should stay at home as they gain little from, and give nothing to the cultures they visit.

Diets will need to change. As the world population gets richer and moves out of poverty, so meat and protein consumption soars. Personally I am happy to reduce my meat consumption radically, but cheese would be more difficult! But I will have a concerted effort soon. Eating more local food is a no brainer, but we should not forgo the benefits of International trade, just stop abusing it. Using poly tunnels to grow fruit and veg in the UK can be more harmful than transporting them from Spain, etc. But why we need apples from NZ and Australia (same for lamb) is beyond me! Economics gone mad. In fact any economic plan that does not factor in the true cost of the project to all aspects of the environment is a. joke.

CORRUPTION

This government is basically like a cess pit of sleaze, misogynism, racism, incompetence and corruption. It has managed to move the focus from its abysmal economic performance to migrants. However, whilst the ageing Torygraph and Daily Fail readers may be enraged and going red in the face, most intelligent people will realise that the Home Office processing of just 4% of migrants is yet more evidence of incompetence.

WOW – THE SHIT KEEPS FLYING

Next time you get mad about benefit claimants or refugees, remember that 7,000 shell companies registered to only five addresses in London made claims to the Covid furlough scheme. They claimed up to £473 million between them. And there are no prosecutions.

Even the Daily Mail has headlined the lack of vetting of recruits to the Police Force, An official report stated that in all 8 police forces “we concluded that a culture of misogyny, sexism, predatory behaviour towards female police officers, and staff and members of the public was prevalent in all the forces we inspected”. I guess they were not looking for racism or homophobia.

Who would trust a police officer now?

The Home Office has a backlog of over 100000 asylum claims. An outdated computer system, low staff retention and maybe a political will to make the situation worse all add to the problem. Having no returns policy since Brexit has made the backlog grow and grow.

Half the bread sold in the UK has at least 2 different types of pesticide – a rise of 50% since last year. A third of the pesticides are illegal in the UK. DEFRA has not commented yet!

Food inflation at 11.6%. I have not seen any pay rises anywhere near these levels apart from executives and those receiving dividends. “Now is the winter of our discontent” looms. teachers are being balloted on strike action.

MIGRANTS

Cruella Braverman is trying to act tough to appease her mates in the IEA. She is also using the tactic of “I do not agree with the advice you are giving me – so I will get legal advice from those who will agree me”, thus rejecting Home Office Advice. At £5 million per day it would surely be cheaper to set up a system whereby applicants for asylum status can apply at any British Embassy or Consul. This should be swiftly processed and those awarded it can be issued with special visas which allow entry to the UK via normal and safe methods. Those entering illegally can then be treated separately,

Those entering and claiming to be victims of people traffickers could be legitimately be put on a plane straight back to country of origin – which in many cases seems to be Albania (which is not in the EU!). By making it easier for legit migrants and asylum seekers to be processed quickly, fairly and efficiently the government could claim the moral high ground.

Whatever happens these migrants are people and should be treated with humanity – not subjected to abysmal conditions in concentration camps. Perhaps giving them an option to work with the promise of a time limited visa would enable the police to divert them away from gangs and the ‘county lines’. Perhaps the police need better funding to deal with that problem? So many solutions but not the will power!

It remains a fact that although a massive increase in Channel migrants has occurred – the %is small compared the 270000 “legal” migrants. We are desperately short of workers and are unlikely to get a trade deal with India without the introduction of an easier migration/visa policy with the sub-continent. The last Health Secretary said that she would recruit nurses from abroad if those in the NHS did not accept that they had already had a pay rise! Coffrey really is obnoxious!

CRISIS POLITICS

What is it with the incompetence of this government? Not happy with taking on an absolute shitshow fro Truss and Johnson, Sunak is busy manufacturing his own quagmire. Braverman reappointment will need to be rescinded if he is to retain any integrity. Many reports refer to her lack of ability.

The world looks on aghast and amazed at the stupidity of snubbing COP27. I posted yesterday about the stupidity of this. Britain has a lot to be proud of in the growth of green energy, but could do more. But snubbing the opportunity to network with world leaders shows a surprising lack of political awareness from Sunak. As does the refusal to allow King Charles to attend and speak? OK Charlie might have spoken out of turn, but it would have had little negative impact (apart from the right wing regime’s?). Are we heading for a period of even greater political isolation?

Pictures of raw sewage being pumped into the sea in Cornwall after a period of rain that would not be considered unusual or extreme are typical of the chaos overseen by this Government over the last 12 years. At least Marie Antoinette supposedly said “let them eat cake” – this governments attitude is to let us swim in shit! The Minister wheeled out to defend the indefensible today basically blamed the public for having downpipes going into the sewage system

COP27

As I have stated – Sunak has made a bad decision in not attending COP27 in Egypt. Not only for environmental reasons, but the networking opportunities to meet with many other world leaders. Heals confirmed the Trussfuck’s decision to stop King Charles going and making a speech. Is it weigh anchor time and move the UK into isolation in the Atlantic?
