WORLD CUP

I see the right wing ghouls have not started ghouling about whether Kane and Bale should wear LGBT arm bands. They are having too much of a good time criticising the team for taking the knee! I used to think that those on the left complained too much! But the ERG and Bruges Group ir incandescent with rage – the gammon faces can be seen from space. They hate the Conservatives more than Labour. Is fascist anarchism a fair name for them?

I just realised that the World Cup is a football tournament. It will raise millions of which some will get through to poorer nations. Who will win? It is often not the best team. So there is hope for England. I do not think Wales have the squad to make it far. Will Messi or Mhappe or Pedro or de Bruyne or Neymar or Ronaldo or Suerez; or will a new one like Gave, Leaf, Valverde or Kudos come through to be the star.

England have played well against Iran. Good possession then touches of brilliance from Saka, Bellingham and Stirling. Iran have just got one back. Lovely goal from Rashford, on as sub and one, two three touches and a very cool goal.

WEATHER

Wet again with persistent rain for a couple of hours. No flood warnings so far near here.

Wintery with temperatures in single figures. I have moved mist of the mints in pots to places by the house to reduce exposure to cold/wind. I will put rest by the garage – then strip the front garden when dry!

AUTUMN STATEMENT OR ITS NOT A BUDGET!

Will the government announce plans to cut subsidies in the HoC and the free parking? Moving tax thresholds will hit middle income people who need to pay rising mortgage costs. Raising top rate of tax to 50p would raise a couple of billion. Imposing tax on aviation fuel would raise quite a lot. Cuts in public spending will be counter productive in the long run. A windfall tax on banks would be good. However all these are tinkering and putting patches on. What we desperately need is a trade deal with Europe. Leaving the EU has meant an increase in paperwork and more barriers.

We will all be annoyed by 5pm. Not annoyed even next morning (Friday now) but

It was a bit here, and a bit there, give a bit and take a bit. Not a lot to get angry about, and not a lot to get angry about. The right wing are devastated which must be a good thing! he did sound Luke warm on energy efficiency and green power which is better than Truss. But energy efficiency spending in 2 years – why wait? Why not onshore wind farms now?

My take on the statement was one of, we know what we need to do but are afraid to go the whole hog, due to the IEA supported/supporting MP’s like Redwood and Sleaze-Dogg. Clever tactic of using delayed implementation of policies hoping people will forget by the time they happen. It also inhibits future (possibly Labour) governments who would need unpick policies – a bit like BREXIT.

RUSSIA

Whilst the Daily Fail keeps “Culture Wars” on the front page, The Torygraphy says Russian missiles hit Poland. It actually appears to have been Ukrainian missiles that were to blame. However the Russian barrage of missiles that the Ukranians were trying to shoot down are the true cause. Shoddy journalism does not help anyone. One has to have sympathy with the Ukrainians who are facing a continental winter without power. It seems that Putin has realised that he cannot beat the Ukraine on the battlefield so is taking out the infrastructure.

It seems likely that NATO may respond by stationing anti-missile batteries along borders with Russia. Meanwhile Xi Jingpin and Modi have cooled their relationships with Russia.

Elsewhere – a toddler does in a mould invested damp flat – MP’s who voted against a law making landlords responsible for this sort of thing should be outed and vilified. I hope this issue is raised at PMQ’s. What else could come up? Eustace talking about the awful trade deal done with Australia (but Labour is not really to confront Brexit). Inflation at over 11% would seem a certainty. Food inflation is particularly concerning. NHS waiting list of 7 million+ has impact on employment (unemployment is rising). Oh basically questions could be about anything this government has its finger in – it is all fucked up. Zac Goldsmith has criticised climate deniers for their stupidity (that means several members of the Cabinet).

Local Authorities face a £10+billion shortfall over the next 3 years – council tax would have to rise by at least 20% to cope with that! Closing libraries and swimming pools will create problems in the future. Health Care is largely down to LA’s and with some hospitals talking of 30% bed blockage there really is a problem. Yet again I ask where does all the money go?

Sperm counts down by over 50% across the globe. No explanations given.

Nice article in the G today about Jeff Bezos and his charitable donation – why does he not just pay tax and proper wages?

Bullying – we know about Braverman and Williamson – Raab is the next whom it seems will be investigated. can questions be raised about the severance pay to Cabinet members dismissed for misconduct or general uselessness!

LABOUR

The left in Britain needs to be careful. What appears to be a huge led in the polls is not due to their success, but to the abject failure of 12 years of Tory rule. Starmer needs to get off the fence on Europe and pay. The message on energy is good and positive. We need more of that. Brexit is now being widely acknowledged as an economic disaster, and should be called out as such by the Labour Party. Greater prominence needs to be given to other Shadow Cabinet Members to move away from the infatuation with party leaders.

FIFA WORLD CUP

Many give died in building the stadiums, the regime is homophobic and misogynist. Should we boycott?

Firstly we need to be aware of the £400 billion invested by the Atari government in the uk. SevernTrent Water, to Selfridges, Claridges, the Shard, PSG, Barclays Bank, Sainsbury’s and many other companies. So whilst I am happy to boycott these we have to be realistic. Lineker and Gary Neville have been slated for commentating, maybe the fact they are doing this has raised the profile of objections to the regime. Beckham is getting £10 million to promote the tournament and therefore the Qatari government. Is there a difference? I believe so.

The government there is as bad as those in Israel and Iran. Would I be in favour of a boycott if it was in one of those? Almost certainly! I can avoid “I’m a celebrity .. blah, blah crap” but this is football!

It should never have been the go ahead in the first place. Jurgen Clop is correct.

IN IT TOGETHER

What a laugh they must have when they switch off the cameras and mikes! FTSE100 CEO get 48% pay rise. Then the tories tell us we all have to have tax rises and see out public services wither away. John Redwood was on twitter saying that a Labour proposal to take away charitable status would mean some schools going bust and more cost for the tax payer. He obviously thinks privilege should be enshrined in law for the rich. He does not state how much charitable status for these schools costs at the moment?

SUNDAY 12 NOVEMBER 2022

Temperature today forecast to reach 18C. That is a huge concern. Trees coming into blossom, insects around (just a few).

Listening to the Trawl podcast. They make the very pertinent point that this government does not care about the British Economy, just the economy of the top 1%. The Truss ‘budget’ will cost the taxpayer £40-50 billion. £10 million of that was purely due to the announcement and the loss of confidence in the government. That confidences is creeping back slowly, The Braverman, Williamson and now Robb appointments have not gone down well with the public.

GEOGRAPHY OF MID-TERM ELECTIONS USA

Fascinating maps on BBC and Guardian. Firstly the BBC map of results look like it was a landslide for the Republicans. However on closer examination at state level there is a much different picture. It is stunning to see the urban (democrat)-rural (republican divide being shown in almost every state. I would guess this to be a similar pattern as that shown in the UK with the younger and better educated being to the left whilst older and not university educated are to the right? This may be a vast oversimplification?

POLICE AND THE FOURTH ESTATE

Police have been arresting journalists for reporting news – in the UK! I might not agree with Stop Oil tactics but arresting journalists is not the democracy I was born into.

The 4th estate is much maligned by myself. However if we leave aside the blatant bias shown by most of the MSM regarding politics and the economy, even the Daily Mail has an awareness of its duty to hold the government and its agencies to account.

Protection of the rights of journalists is paramount to the survival of democracy. Since 1990 2658 journalists have been killed “doing their jobs”. Yesterday a female journalist was arrested, searched, had DNA samples taken and was in a cell for 5 hours for doing her job. The police were either exceeding their powers or have been given too many powers. An instant apology will be needed by not only the Hertfordshire Police, but also the Home Secretary before it goes to court and costs the tax payer unnecessary expense!
