I was thinking about recycling some clothes, but quickly realised that my worn and loved shit would end up in landfill anyway, so save the charities some money. I also misguidedly thought that clothing was used to make quality paper – but wrong yet again.
Having talked to a few friends, we agree that we have favorite clothes that we will wear to destruction and even for distraction! I have a coat that is at least 30 years old – it was quality and even though I ripped the sleeve on a bramble cycling, it is still a favorite. Argh – here is another point – why did I buy other coats when I love my Patagonia. OK , the brand name – or is the quality? I would campaign for quality over quantity. However I also see that fashions change – flared trousers in the 1960’s would be a joke today. But with no advertising fashions would evolve rather than change?
Sustainability is the key here. Even when little I remember having a yellow sweat shirt made by Ladybird – for some obscure reason a Scotland international football shirt. Then later Ben Sterman shirts. Jeans were always Lee Cooper or Levi’s although Shirley did have a pair of jeans that I could say made/ruined my life! So maybe I will allow advertisers a little slack. So I move onto the exciting side of life. Washing – who gives a fuck about washing detergents – buy the cheapest, but then advertising makes them compete and “lower prices”?
However back to longevity – we were talking about washing machines this morning – our conversations are riviting at times! But washing machines are a product that seems to be designed to fail after 3 years and one week! The fundamental problem seems to be the front loading. Is it the rubber that deterioates first? And why front loaders, because of kitchen design.
Also am I the only one to have bought at least 4 shit food mixers – sold by the 300 parts and accessories – which are usually useless. I wish I had good neighbours and we could share things like drills, kitchen equipment, garden stuff. We only use it for 1% of the time. PS. my neighbours are not bad – although I wish they would not park on the opposite side of the road to my driveway – I live in fear of reversing into them, or wishing I had the guts too!
