Which begs the question – what is it actually for? Nuclear war is the common theory. However those who follow the climate change debate might be concerned at the growth in extreme weather. We have had storms before and most survived with there lives. However sea level is now higher, and the warmer atmosphere holds more moisture (a greenhouse gas!) that will lead to heavier downpours. Thus flooding from both sea and rivers is becoming ever more likely. Add to this the ever increasing house and road building (impermeable surfaces with faster runoff, and maybe we will see the real reason for the alarm system rater earlier than hoped for.
