The whole home ownership thing needs a radical rethink. Dale Vance came out with good ideas this morning. Enable land based wind farms that can revert to local public ownership after a set amount of time. I do not understand the funding for Hinkley Point, but this would seem simpler. A firm builds a wind farm with co-operation from the local council and puts up say, £2 million. The government sets a price for the electricity generated. 20% would go to the local council, and after a set time to give the firm a guaranteed return of say 8% (subject to safety and corruption issues, etc,). Then the whole thing would be run by the council for the people. Similar deals could be done for solar and water power (how many old watermills are dotted around the UK. They may not power a factory but with modern technology and efficiency could make a difference?
But the oil companies will hate this – will the Labour government be brave enough to take them on knowing that the RWP support them with millions. I am not sure, either that they could or should! We do not need another Trussup! Being in government is not easy, nor should it be, scrutiny has been missing for at least the last 10 years but should not give Labour a free pass to cock up!
