Basic human requirements were monetised in this country by Thatcher who sold off our basic utilities for a short term electoral boost and lining the pockets of her wealthy supporters. She would have privatised air if she could have found a way. Basic economics says that the price of a good should be determined by supply and demand. But this is a made up law esconced as as a fact when it does not have to be so. Thatcher allowed the oil companies to benefit from our North Sea oil and then squandered the income form taxing them on ‘breaking’ the unions. She also sold of affordable housing thus creating the current crisis of poverty and homelessness. Farmers could be paid guaranteed amounts for food stuffs (hmmm. memories of the EU C.A.P.?) and thus basic foods could be affordable to all. Petrol and diesel costs are a little more problematic as we need to transition away from them. However more could be done to reduce emissions with greater grants for EV’s especially vans – lorries will take longer, but transitioning to a more local economy would be a step in the right direction – baby steps rather than giant sized ones that only big business can afford. Small is beautiful and economies of scale offset by local production in many fields.
Meanwhile the Mail has decided to join the game of demanding that we drill for more gas and oil – with no mention that this would do nothing, absolutely jack shit, to salve the present crisis.
