CAR TAX

The car crept into our culture without ever being debated – it is one of the ultimate capitalist toys. I am not a petrol head, but love my car for the freedom of movement it gives me rather than my ego (a completely different discussion – Clarkson!). Covid showed a need for different transport alternatives in cities. In rural areas the car is essential. So road pricing will be discriminatory against rural areas, and the poor for whom it is essential.

So maybe like for like taxation is not practical. Road pricing in cities with alternative transport would seem practical. Is there a difference between individual movement and commercial?

Counties like Cornwall will grind into poverty if free/cheap movement is not available. Movement of goods and commerce is paramount to society and economic wellbeing – selling goods in the best market available, etc.. But the economics of transport need evaluation. How can burger from Australia be cheaper than one from 10km down the road, unless the transport costs and CO2 emissions are disregarded?
