FOOTBALL

An interesting start to the season. Brighton, West Ham and Everton all looking good, as do Chelsea, ManU, belatedly ManC, Liverpool. Leicester were looking good until taken apart by WHU.

Harry Kane seems stuck. at Spurs – will Man City go for Mbappe? or wait for Haaland?

REFLECTIONS

Firstly the eloquence of Gareth Southgate in defeat. No hiding behind rhetoric or falsehoods. Straight answers and an apology. Secondly, we were out thought tactically by a better, if rather dirty, side. Our boys will mature and I believe be a formidable unit in the next World Cup, if they can survive the heat of the Arabian desert!

WHAKAPAPA

The Maori way of explaining your place in the world, (pronounced farkapapa) has apparently been used by the England performance coach. Owen Eastwood has also worked with the British Olympic Association, the royal Ballet School and NATO!

FOOTBALL FANTASIA

Oh the poor press! It seems that they have not had anything exciting or positive to report for months, maybe even years. The hyperbole has however gone through the roof, it is just a game guy’s! Could we please keep sport to the back pages, and possibly centre pages. The government used yesterday to announce the reduction of the £20 extra Universal Credit.

ENGLAND FOOTBALL TEAM

Whatever the result tonight I am in awe of the team. The unity shown, the social awareness (taking the knee), the humility they show from the the manager to the support team. Whilst the government goes out of its way to be divisive, this team truly represents the England I want to be part of.

BRILLIANT

England football team produced a very professional performance to defeat their usual nemesis Germany. Raheem Sterling was again the first scorer (3 in a row in these championships) and then Kane ended his drought with a brilliantly taken goal. So we are in the quarterfinals. I think Southgate has the wherewithal to take us to the finals. We have an excellent team, good organisation and ability to play the modern game, i.e. knowing when and who to bring on from the subs bench. Today it was Grealish, but there are many others with skills that could make this team great. Rashford, Foden, Sancho Calvet-Lewin to name a few attacking options. And we should not forget that the England defence still has not conceded a goal (yes there has been a little luck – but no more than anyone else). We have not scored loads, but we have been winning.
