COVID

First ‘living with Covid’ – unfortunately to many people have died with Covid. Javid said we can expect numbers of cases to rise to 100.000 a day. If we extrapolate current figures that will equate tp 36 deaths a day and 400 hospitalisations. Is this acceptable to the government? What is an acceptable death toll? How many cases can the NHS cope with? And the predictions are that there will be more influenza cases this winter (especially without masks). And Covid is not like influenza, as many people are using as an excuse to party on. It has an R number of about 7 compared to ‘flu’s 1.28, it has benefited from WHO research into vaccines that are effective against new variants, no such co-operation yet exists to combat the new variants of Covid that are inevitable. Hopefully the surge in numbers predicted by the government will not result in new variants (we had the Kent variant in the last surge – and Indian and South African worldwide).

Second ‘responsibility’. The majority of the public are reasonably responsible, (more so than members of the government), but if the rule on masks is taken away, the government will have removed the reminder to us all to behave responsibly. Masks are proven to be of help in reducing the spread of the virus. The government is also playing the mental health card. In my age group it seems that the majority are actually enjoying many of the restrictions. Local shopping, hobbies, less traffic, etc. By the way, I do not like wearing a mask – but needs must, and I will continue to do so in crowded places, or, if others do not see the common sense in wearing a mask to protect others, I will continue to avoid these spaces. We have seen the info regarding Scotland covid cases related to the Wembley match and other football related venues – have these been released for the England matches? The government has ‘licensed test events’ for sport and entertainment – where are the results?

The shame is that ‘getting back to normal’ is the new mantra, when even a few months ago people were discussing ‘a new normal’. Is this going to be yet another missed opportunity? Schools and offices and other buildings need better aeration (However as we have seen a disaster like the Grenville Tower does not result in government action). The government wants people back in offices, not for lifestyle and health reasons, but city businesses and the railways need the money for shareholders. Ministers seem to have been sleeping on the job! Where are the innovative new ideas and initiatives? Oh, apart from a trade deal with our neighbours in Australia and the Pacific – hey bozo’s spin the globe round to the Atlantic and you will find our tiny island there!
