CRISIS – WHAT CRISIS?

The general consensus is that recent issues of importance have been building for years. Gas storage has been cut; HVG drivers (to be known as truck drivers) are on average in or near 50 years old or over.

The hateful vote on Brexit was 23 June 2016. Five years with the same government and ‘suddenly’ we have supply problems and labour shortages. For sure Covid has made a bad situation worse, it has not turned a great situation in to a bad one.

Not all of this is a Tory fault – well 99.9% is – but why has the UK relied on foreign NHS staff, HGV drivers, agricultural workers, abattoir and meat packaging for so long? Leaving key industries to the free market is nonsensical. A free market on the train network is ridiculous. The same for water and energy networks. The networks should be in public ownership, whilst the energy providers could be open to free enterprise with better regulation than recently.
