FREEDOM DAY

Freedom is a concept that is bandied about without being understood. Civilised society has laws, behaviours and conventions which, whilst restricting our “freedoms’, ensure that we can enjoy most of the activities required for a fulfilled life freely. The pandemic has created new restrictions (just as the AIDS disease did about 40 years ago). Politicians on the right are using the word freedom like confetti to justify endangering the poor and BAME communities, and the young. All these groups are suffering more from Covid, both are more likely to travel on public transport.

To me freedom means living in a community where I can share space with all others without being scared of a possible physical, mental or environmental invasion detrimental to my health. To be free I need to be able to be in the same room as you without undue fear of catching Covid (or other diseases) or physical violence . I think that in many cases like busy shops, public transport, cinemas, pubs, restaurants, cafes, etc. this will require social distancing and mask wearing until the Johnson variant has worn itself out. At least Shapps said he would wear the mask where appropriate.
