FUEL CRISIS

Mixed messages and lack of policy as usual. The army may be called in to help, or it may not. But do not panic – we have plenty of fuel – just no where near you! An estimated 2/3 of independent traders are out of fuel. Short queue at the co-op as I drove past just now.

The main government policy seems to be pleading with people not to but too much? They told people not to panic (which they were not until told this!). Who is the chief muppet here? Kwasi Kwarteng has been at the forefront of the ‘bollocks talking’. Grant Shapps seems the most culpable (leaving the EU is part of the solution!). Johnson is the most culpable along with Gove for the lies during Brexit Campaign. And Sunak keeps his head down!

It appears that the Government is relying on all the low mileage drivers having filled their tanks soon, so ‘things can get back to normal”. I think we may be developing a “NEW NORMAL” here. One where there is no guarantee that pulling into a garage will enable you to fill up with metro or diesel (and the AA attended 250 people who put the wrong one in their car at the weekend!). One thing for sure is that new HGV drivers will not appear overnight, at least not properly qualified and trained ones.

A Brexit fact 17000 HGV drivers have left Britain since 2017. Another fact – average age of HGV driver is 55.
