MAXWELL/EPSTEIN

So it comes down to the much maligned press. They have had much to be maligned about! But have also had moments to justify their existence – Watergate being the most famous, but recent file disclosures to the Guardian and NYTimes and others have shown the importance of a free press. If government and it representatives are involved, its agencies refusing to act, then the public basically has only the free press to turn to. In this country we can probably write off the Telegraph as a right wing newsletter for the retired; the Sun which does not actually recognise an important news story; the Star which will be great for a clever headline (as long as no snow is forecast); the Express which probably will not last much longer; the Mirror will probably give it a go but probably no longer has the resources necessary. So that leaves the Mail which has been steered to. the right again by the reappointment of a major right-winger in Paul Dacre- and now also owns the i. The Times is another Murdoch outlet, but if not implicating him or his family he might give it a go., That leaves the Guardian, with its basically tiny readership – although its online presence is quite large and does have a good readership in the states.

So basically we have the Times and the Guardian. The Mail has spent its time cultivating a love of the royal family and its tradition to risk alienating its middle class female readership.
