POLITICS – WHAT NEXT

But this is an incredible opportunity. Work patterns have changed. Wealth gaps have increased. The geography of cities, holidays, work, leisure have all changed or have the ability to.

Education – At least we could trust Williamson not to have a creative gene in his limited brain. More lessons for the disadvantaged is ridiculous – get them out into the environment, or work places, or anywhere which they find enjoyable and apply education in that context. It is almost like saying Covid didn’t kill you, so we will do it through the boredom of Maths and English lessons.

Environment – instant legislation on new builds regarding carbon emissions. Solar panels on all public buildings. Wind farms on land where appropriate (Can we have little wind turbines on electricity pylons? If not, why not? Electricity generators installed in the now defunct chimneys of most houses. Is it the Disney motto that says ‘if you can dream it, you can do it”?

Green Spaces – apparently the road verges of Britain are the equivalent in area to Dorset. Re-wilding would hopefully enable insects to repopulate the wilderness that many places have become. I am not keen on being stung, but wasps in 1950’s were a problem I associated with growing up – now I am just immensely pleased to see one; no longer roll up a paper and splat! but open the windows and doors and encourage to go outside. My own campaign – number of members 1 – is front lawns.

Cities – a need for a financial sea change here if city centres are to thrive – as they should being situated in the hub of the urban area. Could business rates be replaced by a % tax on rental costs. This would let businesses move to the most economically profitable part of town, landlords would have to price accordingly, and the Local Authority should be able to receive the same revenue. I guess there would need to be a levy on out of town centres and …. I need to think this through – … I think the rapid move to electric cars and rapid charging will make out of town shopping centres popular again. The city centre will have to rely on better transport networks, and maybe the development of a cafe and individualistic type shop. However if the right structure is created the ‘organism like nature of city development will resolve the problem – if the planners are versatile enough.”
