PUBLIC SERVICES

Under the tories all the above have been cut. With a cost of living crisis the middle classes will need that support more than ever – but it has crumbled away. The mantra that lower taxes meant. more money in your pocket is a false one for the majority of people. What if they get ill and it means going private, their car breaks down and the bus service has been withdrawn (as is happening here), local parks have been built on and they find out what employment sickness benefit means.

I am sure there is wastage of public money, as there is wastage in private companies and efficiencies should reward those who propose them. Covid revealed that many will defraud the systems set up to support others. And the government let them do it with impunity – but wo betide you if you demonstrate against the police!

Public services are being replaced by charity – and when those who give are also squeezed and the giving runs out – what then?

We are not there yet. Fuel bills will hit harder during the winter, especially for those with pre-payment meters – no money, no heating, cooking or hot water. The same with mortgages – only when those on fixed rates have to renew will the extra £1000 or £2000 hit nome. Inflation creeps up insidiously. e.g.Milk has risen from £2.00/4ltr to £3.20; it is set to continue.

Ask for a commensurate pay rise and it is refuse – ballot for strike action and you will be demonised by the Tory Media. A Tory MP called food bank volunteers “do gooders’ with distain and reiterated that a meal costs 30p -NOB.

Charity is an admission of failure by society.
