RACISM AND POLITICS

Golliwogs – a recent poll by YouGov (founded by ???!!) found that half the population of the UK do not find golliwogs offensive. I understand this to sime extent. I grew up with Golliwogs on jam labels and even little badges – it did not occur to me that this might be offensive to some. many of us live in communities where this offence might be pointed out, or become blindingly obvious, so I am not surprised at the poll. Geographical and demographic analysis would have been interesting. Places with fewest BAME residents are traditionally the most racist. But we should also remember that BAME members can also be racist – Braverman for example. People of all ages and ethnicicity are racist for a variety of non-compatable (in some cases) reasons – wealth, poverty, education, social class, education, heritage.

Racism – a major offensive was made against the Labour Party and Jeremy Corbyn regarding Jews. In retrospect this seems to be way out of proportion with the overt racism shown by many tories. Calling out Israel for its fascist politics of apartheid towards Palestinians is surely the duty of sensible, intelligent human beings? Was he naive in being so blatent at taking sides on this and other issues – maybe; but the vilification he received is totally ignored by the MSP – todays Mail leads with a comment that Sunak knows that women do not have a penis – maybe it is trying to educate its readers about this fact?
