BANWELL BYPASS

The trouble with questionnaires is that they do not distinguish between the vital and the trivial!

The Q completely misses the key issues. Will there need to be a roundabout by the Church? Possible congestion through the village when school. open. Speeding due to higher speeds on bypass – we have all done it, it is difficult to suddenly slow down. The likely problem in Churchill with the 2 stone walls. Impact on Winscombe – traffic increase from Sandford/Hill Road, and therefore the Junction at Brown’s Corner by Co-Op. If main road then becomes the straight one, will that increase traffic speed in Winscombe High Street. With the increase in housing in Winscombe and Sandford I doubt that Banwell will receive the huge boost it expects in less traffic. So why is it being built? To show that Tories get things done (regardless of practicality and cost). Obviously it is to facilitate quicker movement of commercial vehicles and generate money, and free up more land for housing.

But benefits from Thatchers and Sweetings lorries having a better way to the motorway will reduce traffic in village slightly, but I do not see them as a problem. Banwell should benefit. But Weston-s-Mare traffic to Cheddar and the A38 will be diverted through Sandford. I wonder what the projections for the new houses are regarding traffic? All in all I would predict an increase of at least at least several thousand per day.

Hill Road, A368 and Nye Road intersection will need a roundabout? Demolish church or Humphreys or Yew Tree Cottage? If travelling from Winscombe to Weston or M% it would now make sense to avoid Banwell.

Comments on the questionnaire

Speed cameras – no, unless geared to only send warning letters unto 10mph above speed limit for time of day (20mph school times).

Average speed cameras – as above but slightly preferable.

20mph speed limit zone along A368 – a bit OTT apart from school times.

Village gateways – sounds expensive and probably not appropriate, and there is no mention of Churchill in the questionnaire. Rather than road narrowing, double white lines and signs to prevent overtaking would be practical.

Actual bypass should have extensive wildlife havens and corridors (and surveys to see if migration routes of animals such as toads, frogs, badgers are impacted). Planting of appropriate vegetation.

Other biodiversity net gain measures???????

Tree and hedge planting on roadsides in Sandford? Who is responsible for this ridiculous comment? Whilst I can agree with the sentiment – exactly where would this take place? (to reduce pollution, noise, flooding?!!). Regardless of the by-pass it would be good to see the Parish Council provide grants for the rewinding/planting of areas in the village like the bus stop opposite school, Sandford Stores, end of Somerville Road – and probably some more.

Roadside benches and planters along A368 – where? And who wants to sit on them. I have never in 20 years seen anyone sit on the bench outside Sandford Church on Hill Path (a much quieter road.

Air Quality Monitoring equipment – only if road will be closed if levels of pollution exceed WHO limits. Back to page 1 – noise level could be massively reduced by replacing the present very noisy road surface.
