IT IS NOT DIFFICULT!!!

Sajid Javid tests positive; so all who were in close proximity to him need to weld isolate under government rules. With lockdown chaos day tomorrow, now, more than ever, we. need clear action by Ministers. But what do we get? Normal dithering and whilst they try to work out which lies they can most likely get away with.

Patel make claim for this weeks worst Minister prize. Lying to parliament about consultations with the Police Federation which they deny. Lying seems to be competing with incompetence as the most necessary attribute for Government Positions. Williamson missing in inaction – schools exasperated by lack of guidance with over 800000 self isolating last week – it seems all responsibility for anything has been passed to schools. he is probably now drafting statements blaming schools and teachers for the exam result debacle next month. France was removed from the list freeing people from quarantine restrictions on return. It was said to be due to the prevalence of the Beta variant – Johnson (former foreign secretary) obviously did not know that under the French Constitution Reunion and Mayotte in the Indian Ocean are deemed to be part of France by their government. And the Foreign Aid cut goes through to appease the populist bigots on the right of the nasty party.

The government is continuing with its plan to increase the UK’s nuclear arsenal by 40% – that will make us all sleep better tonight! Oh how I hate tories!

The police continue to try and get in on the act. Violence and dishonesty at the Met’s main training centre at Hendon (Is this why Dick got a gong?) Police raid a 12 year old to ensure she is self-isolating; Police in Bristol raid a 21 year old with 4 male officers and handcuff her wearing not a lot for 20 minutes despite it obviously being the wrong person – ad no reprimand for any of them.

Oh, and masks reduce infection rates by between 10-25%.

A reminder that Richard Branson pays no UK tax and has sued the NHS for £200 million. Nice bloke!

COVID

Cases hit 50000 a day, More than 40% of 18-29 year olds unvaccinated. Hospitals divert staff away from other treatments, including cancer. All companies seem to be suffering from the ping. Holiday makers coming back from France hit by surprise quarantine measures. BUT no worries ‘freedom day’ will go ahead, what does it matter if a few hundred more people die – we don’t like wearing a mask nanny!

PING

How useless can test and trace get? There has to be an explanation for the increase in pings. It could be that they have made it more sensitive – in response to the Johnson variant which is much more potent and transmissible. A noble thought, but not if it results in the app being deleted! People have complained about being pinged because of their next door neighbours wall not being thick enough.

SUSTAINABLE CITIES

Floods in London after 70mm of rain fell in 90 minutes. Yes that is heavy rainfall but should not have led to flood waters a metre high. The reason being that we have paved over vast areas of our cities and towns to create parking spaces. What we really need is to create more sponge type areas. mature trees can absorb 250lts or more per day, with the added benefit of ameliorating temperature extremes, and during hot spells providing welcome shade and habitats for wildlife.

COVID RESTRICTIONS TO BE LIFTED

Personal discretion to replace legally enforceable rules. he cannot even enforce the rules within his own cabinet, let alone expect the country to act sensibly. Even with supposed legally enforceable rules there are many round here who do not wear a mask in the shop. It might be a small percentage, but how many does it need to spread the virus? Javid says we have to live with the virus and manage the risks. Does he really think passing responsibility for sensible behaviour to the individual is managing the risks. Did he not see the scenes at Wembley, in pubs and then notice the furore over the racist abuse on social media.

REFLECTIONS

Firstly the eloquence of Gareth Southgate in defeat. No hiding behind rhetoric or falsehoods. Straight answers and an apology. Secondly, we were out thought tactically by a better, if rather dirty, side. Our boys will mature and I believe be a formidable unit in the next World Cup, if they can survive the heat of the Arabian desert!

HOW GOOD IS THE VACCINE?

Johnson has banged on about the vaccine for so long that he must hope we forget about how pathetically useless he is. With Covid shutting down swathes of the country it may be time to actually evaluate how effective it is, BEFORE we reduce restrictions. As ever the maths does not make much sense. 87% of adults have been vaccinated once, 65% twice. So about/less than 10 million have yet to be jabbed. Deaths are way down on the past, but hospitalisations creeping up (and impacting on the already huge backlog). The Health Secretary reports that maybe 100000 new cases a day may occur over the next month.

HARD TO BELIEVE

Vaccinators have been threatened, and centres have had to deploy staff to explain why they cannot give a second job earlier than 8 weeks. Security guards have been hired in some places. Has the population of this country always been so selfish that they would threaten staff whose job and ethos is to save lives, for their own gratification of a week or two in the sun with a hangover? No sign of Whakapapa here! Maybe we should just cancel return flights!

WHAKAPAPA

The Maori way of explaining your place in the world, (pronounced farkapapa) has apparently been used by the England performance coach. Owen Eastwood has also worked with the British Olympic Association, the royal Ballet School and NATO!

COVID FACTS

I am assuming the following are true. Case of Covid could reach 100.000 a day (Secretary of State for Health); cases in Central Oxford – a university student area- have reached 2011 per 100.000. Other university towns and cities are also reporting higher levels of the virus, Students have not been prioritised for vaccination. the Secretary of State for Transport has not published research into Covid connections with amber list countries. The Secretary of State for Education has not had a positive thought regarding education, probably ever. The NHS is cancelling operations due to increased numbers of covid cases, and staff having to self isolate. Covid is affecting people from poorer areas and BAME backgrounds disproportionately. The WHO has recommended that all countries lift restrictions slowly.
