LEVELLING UP

So Gove’s job will be to talk the talk but not walk the walk. He is quite good at this, but if he fails Johnson will be happy to show him the door after Johnsons first leadership attempt. At present levelling up seems to consist of a vague promise of a rail up grade, and a few hundred million for green energy.

The Houses of Parliament need refurbishing – so move it to Wentworth Woodhouse in Yorkshire. Rotherham, Leeds, Sheffield, Barnsley, Doncaster all close by. The Civil Service can operate by Zoom if necessary. maybe split the House of Lords off to somewhere else – somewhere west of Birmingham in the Welsh Borders would be nice for them! The input to the local economy in the north would be immense and at virtually no political or economic cost to the Treasury. Somewhere will have to be found anyway.

Geographically it probably makes sense to move it to the NEC at Birmingham – never been there so do not know suitability. Greater efficiency would also cut costs – electronic voting for a start would save hours every week. I know that Johnson prefers to have baying idiots behind him, but surely the debates on peripheral issues could be held either on Zoom or timetabled to enable reduced travel and subsistence rates – some are attended by barely the quorum. So perhaps full attendance Tuesday/Wednesday, peripheral meetings Monday and Thursday. The civil service buildings in Whitehall can be used for these as well.
