I think the cold spell is down to La Nina in the autumn! But the Met Office are annoying, sending out yellow warnings without there actually being anything to be concerned about. I think it is called crying wolf! or ‘fire’ or something!

Just get this bit out of the way – Farts
The Helm Wind (the only named wind in the UK) is a strong north-easterly wind hitting the southwest slopes of Cross Fell in Cumbria. When a wind blows at a constant speed and direction through a layer of stable air perpendicular to the ridge or peak of hills and mountains, the result is something called a lee wave.

Storm Bella
Met office warnings for rain (yellow) and wind (amber in Cornwall). Looks like it should arrive here at about midnight. Weather wise it has been an ok year. A good summer without being too hot – what I think of a a typical English summer, bit of rain, bit of sun. Water butts did not get empty, not quite.
Bella was stormy last night, wheelie bins blown over.
WEATHER PHENOMENA
I find the weather fascinating – some interesting phenomena include the following -look for pictures on YouTube.
St.Elmo’s Fire – Elmo’s fire is sometimes observed at night from the tops of ships’ masts when electrified clouds are overhead. The mast appears to be on fire but does not burn. St. Elmo’s‘ fire tends to occur toward the end of a thunderstorm.
Haboob – Giant walls of dust that form in desert areas in front of a thunderstorm cell. They are created by downward thrusts of cold air inside the storm cell, which blows sand and dust outward. These events can be seen in places such as the Sahara Desert and southwestern United States.
Broken Spectre – A Brocken spectre, also called Brocken bow or mountain spectre, is the magnified shadow of an observer cast upon clouds opposite the Sun’s direction.
LA NINA
Last post on this was 22 October. We are having a cold spell, but the fires in California may also be related to the drier than normal weather. Expect higher than normal rainfall and floods in NW USA and Great Lakes region. La Nina explained. Australia largely wetter and Japan colder.

Weather
All this excitement and I forgot to mention the weather! Well yesterday was cold at first, before dawn, and then after I had done the papers and the sun came up (I think) we had a frost, then sunny later. Same today although foggy start and road was really slippery – I walked down the middle with my arms out doing an impression of a tortoise plane! Nice music on my shuffle though. Carly Simon and Carole King with a bit of PFloyd, brain damage, always good. Tomorrow is a later start 7am, but more of a hassle with all the supplements to put in.
