Growing our own food in a sustainable way is surely the way forward. Setting areas aside for wildlife is nice, and in some areas necessary, but generally a less intensive way of farming is surely of more benefit long term. Cheap foreign imports is not an answer as the damage done elsewhere is probably worse.
George Useless the environment secretary said he disagreed with the criticisms of the PAC which looked into proposals. Of course he did because people with limited ability can never recognise any failings in themselves.
If Brexit has any benefits it would be for us to reorganise our economy locally. Unfortunately the Brexit campaign was funded by the rich who want to maintain the pre-eminence of the major food conglomerates.
So can we now see a proper policy based on the environment, the local market and Britain. Australian and New Zealand meat products need to be special to be here – not replacing our manufacturers and farmers. Parmesan cheese is ok here, but Italian cheddar NOO!
