But is it down to wheelie bins and food waste recycling? A few years back and waste food would be put in dustbin with a lid which may or may not fit perfectly. Black bagging everything was not common, so wrapping in newspaper? I remember only a couple of years ago using fly spray (OK I regret it now), But for the last couple of years virtually nothing. I haver a solitary wasps nest in the garage which is cool (as long as I do not get stung!).

But where are the insects? (and the birds and the bats?). Have we become too tidy? Chris Baines once said that the Severn Estuary was helped by the dumping of sewage, and led to vast numbers of waders in the estuary. (I think this is correct – Sorry Chris if I am wrong).
