LITTER

Charging fast food outlets a surcharge to cover the cleaning costs might just make people drop it as they ‘have paid for the litter pickers’. Would putting skips on beaches encourage people to use them?

Increasing fines and enforcing them would help, but I am not sure practical. We probably do not have enough enforcement officers? Maybe banning people from beaches if they have littered?

Banning alcohol from beaches (as happens in many USA states), might help.

Maybe posting CCTV camera shots of littering online? Or just putting up CCTV cameras in some areas.

Education has obviously not worked. The car park outside my local shop has 7 spaces and in 2 days had 3 coffee cups dropped despite being only 3 m to a large bin. Some people are just yobs! And cleaning the mess left behind does not solve the problem.

Maybe the threat of increased parking in hot spot areas would deter some people? But the ultimate solution will be to stop producing plastic and have a deposit scheme for cans and bottles.
