CLIMATE

09.50 Already 23C in my living room with all doors and windows open. Tomorrow estimated to hit 33C here I might keep an hourly tab to see how it increases. My memories of 1976 are not ones of the extreme heat, but of water shortages due to drought conditions. I suppose the water companies have been to busy filling rivers with sewage and directors/ shareholders pockets with cash to prepare for this entirely predictable event.

It has been 29C inside with all doors and windows open, and a breeze. Tomorrow does not look brilliant heat wise. Hit 30C at 17.00

NOBS

Have used my quota of “NOBS and NOBETTES” for now on twitter. I have also watered the garden and hosed the inside of the greenhouse. Some chillies and red peppers developing. Flowers great but still a lack of bees and insects. A couple of bowls of water out for the birds. Californian poppies, evening primrose and chicory have all been great. Thyme and mints seem slow to recover after the great slug/snail war.

BIRD FEEDERS

All was quiet then 3 long tailed tits, 2 robins, 1 great tit, 1 blue tit, 1chaffinch, 1 hedge sparrow in 5 mins. And then gone.

Reporter in the G said lack of butterfly’s might be down to earlier hatching – nob. They are disappearing.

QUALITY OF LIFE THREATENED

The nobs standing to become PM via leadership of the nasty party. They have collectively been in power for 12 years and seen the economy crash beyond other countries (Covid is not an excuse). There seems to be no philosophy or real vision. Tax cuts so that we can level down.

SCHOOL NUMBERS

Latest project states a fall in pupil numbers from 7859000 to 6915000 in the next decade. As school finances are based on student numbers that creates a major problem. I am sure the geographical spread is uneven, which will create more pressure in some areas.

CLIMATE

Firstly this is not necessarily climate change, but probably is. The Mayor of London has, correctly, called a climate emergency for the next few days. But our government – do we have one? has not said anything!

PASSATA

1.5kg toms deseeded; 4 cloves garlic; 2tbs olive oil and a handful of basil leaves torn. The last is not very helpful – and I know I do this myself! So I will adopt my own version.

Roast toms and garlic (skins on) in oven at 170 for 1 hour. Process and then put through mesh. I will not do the last bit as this is food to be enjoyed, not for the photographer or nob! I will add chopped/torn basil – looks like I might have plenty of red and sweet and greek basil.

TOMATOES AND LEMONS

First tomatoes will be picked tomorrow 14 July which seems a bit late? With the cost I think I will just need a handful per plant to break even as I have sold £10 worth which pays for the seed and pots., Just picked cucumber number 3 which may be it?

Box of Leons has arrived from Spain. So lemon recipes.

Lemon basil drink.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 2 cups water
  • 3 tablespoons pure maple syrup
  • 4 fresh basil leaves (roughly 1 tablespoon minced)
  • Combine the lemon juice, water, maple syrup, and basil leaves in a blender, and blend until the basil is completely broken down. No need to strain! (If your basil leaves are particularly large, start with just 2 leaves, and add more to taste.) 
  • Serve over ice right away, or store it in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 3 days

A SUMMER DRINK

I was given out of date lime and lemons by the shop. I have lots of mints, so I thought I would have a go at something. Mints:apple lemon verbena and lemon balm, Bowles M, pineapple m, ginger m, chocolate m, Spanish m, Atlas Mt.M. Some ginger and lots of fresh lime and lemon juice and some honey. Not bad. I think with ice lemon and thin slices of apple? And maybe vodka or gin?

  •  zest of 6 large lemons (you are going to strain it later so keeping the zest in large pieces is preferable – I do this by using a potato peeler to remove it from the lemons.)
  • 500g sugar
  • 500ml lemon juice (around 10 lemons depending on size and volume of juice)
  • 500ml water
  • 40 large mint leaves ripped into pieces

I like my mint to be a subtle undertone so perhaps half this amount.
