STUDENT LOANS AND THE GENERATION GAP

My generation had free and subsidised university education, free prescriptions and dental care. And now anyone who paid into a pension scheme that gave them a lump sum to pay off the mortgage is ridiculously wealthy in comparison to when at work. Take out the mortgage cost, take out the travel costs of commuting to work, the need for work clothes (those who know me can stop laughing), and the money is there to spend. I am not talking about the ability for retired people to enjoy well earned holidays, etc. But if our children need help, it is time for this generation of oldies to step up. We did not endure the war, or National Service, so it is time to put hands in pockets (not just for the privileged children, but all).
