“For the first time I’m actually genuinely reconsidering using this app. It’s multifaceted, I’ll explain: I’ve had very real threats of violence which have spiked in recent months, I have at least five stalkers who screenshot and smear me all day every day, some of whom try to assume my identity. The overt homophobia racism and misogyny is unbearable to endure and witness. Bot farms of far right lunatics leap on every post, their tactics range from reaching to smear, to mindless abuse, to telling me to kill myself. So called hard left accounts are no better, they sexually degrade and harass, they’ve photoshopped me onto soft porn for fucks sake, they provide infinite resources and fuel to the far right. In one of the pile on’s “ex Labour” accounts and Barton fanatics worked together to attack. Every time I draw attention to what happens I get the impression people think I’m complaining about nothing, women are expected to put up and shut up. Never explain, never complain, well I don’t have the privilege to do that. I only draw attention to about 1% of it. “Just block them” yeah if it was that easy there would be no problem. Or they lack sympathy as if I’m not a perfect target because I fight back. Or they think I deserve it because I’ve been forthright, sweary and angry (the worst possible things a woman can be besides childless with a cat) or because I’ve roasted Tory (and other right wing figures) which think was fair enough as they ruined our country. There’s a mad conspiracy, Trump, Reform, Tory, TERF, far right, far left crossover, all people that have bought the culture war bullshit because they can only find a sense of self or identity in their nationality or hating other people by punching down. It’s misplaced fear, it’s them being conned by rich people who are implementing divide and conquer tactics, it is working and it’s a fucking mess. People are letting themselves be henchmen and pawns in a rich man’s game and it’s not just depressing but dangerous. That arsehole ruined this place by buying it, which was clearly the plan, whether restoring the accounts of genuinely dangerous people, letting violent misogynists and criminals have a platform to use the n word and degrade women or allowing (if not encouraging) hard right bots to flood the zone – its out of control. Even those of us with a fair amount of organic followers are struggling to counter it. It’s wholesale disinformation, it’s fuel to the angry mob. I fear this app is lost to it and I think it’ll spread out beyond social media, genuinely I think that’s the plan. Blood on the streets. The Tory government and Reform c*nts have a part to play, by using the Bannon playbook, by cosying up to Republicans (because, money), demonising asylum seekers and spreading fear about Muslim people. Now even people born in Britain who aren’t white are having their legitimacy as a citizen being questioned. Farage destroyed Britain with Brexit based on a con that only benefited hedgefunders and disaster capitalists and AGAIN people have bought the bullshit he’s selling because they’re disillusioned, uneducated, easily led and the right own everything, social media and actual media alike. They hold the monopoly of wealth and resources. They have the money and platforms to influence and persuade. Social media is the new frontier of psychological influence and control in the misinformation war and it’s radicalising people. For those of us using our real faces all it takes is one rogue “lone wolf” to target me (and inevitably blame it all on his mental health) and its game over. I genuinely do not know how it’s possible to counter it, or if it’ll even work to try. For the first time I’m actually wondering if it’s all worth it. There’s only so much anyone can take before considering whether it’s futile. No matter how many followers you have, when thousands are targeting one person it’s not a fight you can win and that’s what it’s like most of the time now.”
