COVID-19 LATEST STATS

The stats are on the next page. Only a dozen selected places. But they do give bit of a picture. Cornwall and IoW ok, Exeter falling quickly (presumably to do with students, as is Bristols rapid increased? Of more concern is the steady increase in semi-rural parts like N.Som and Chelmsford and Braintree. What number has to be hit before new level imposed? I feel missing the opportunity of half term, for a circuit breaker will be regretted.

Stats from BBC

COVID 22.10.20

My little survey of places in the south of England shows a 10-20% increased in last few days. N.Somerset to 64, Bristol 228, Chelmsford 68, Plymouth 98, Braintree 58, IoW 25. Only Cornwall seems unaffected at the moment in my little survey at 29. I suspect that if I did more I would find that the rate is increasing across the south. So, I am here with a laptop and can see that rates are rising fast. So act now, yes f***ing now! Not in 5 days/ 10 days time. We have been told enough times that it takes 14 days for infections to become statistics.

And stop bleating about personal freedom and the economy. Having to move to a longer shut down affecting more people and businesses will cost more in the long run.

HOUSING ECONOMICS

I am not sure this will all make sense as I am developing my ideas as I progress.

I am starting with a base line of about 1990 when the average house price was about 3 x average income (maybe a little higher – hence need for 1x second income). Now the figure is 6x average income and for many areas a lot higher. This is madness that has been allowed to develop. Over 3 million 20-30 year olds are now living with parents.

A vicious Tory government imposed a bedroom tax on council tenants – why not all of us? I live in a 3 bed bungalow. I think it totally fair to tax me more because of this, but I would get a reduction in Council Tax if I was alone. I am sure that many people would come up with sob stories about family, etc. But for the benefit of society, if it made more houses come on market and reduced prices that would be great. And those living in huge houses can just pay more council tax – end of! Or sell. We live in difficult times where as usual the poor are expected to give up more and suffer.

Second homes – there are a huge number! Nationalise them – why do you need 2 homes or more? I would compensate but not at full price! The poorest are having to miss meals, worry about rent, so sorry – tough!

Renting. This is an important sector as it allows the quick and easy movement of people needed in the economy. However I think it has got a bit out of hand. Landlords are making a fortune out of rising value of premises, and this is of course theoretical money. Surely there should be a fair rent ratio, and basic standards required by landlords.

Interesting in today’s Guardian (22.10.20) suggesting that council/ affordable housing should be provided for 20-30 year olds to enable them to save for a mortgage.

CENTRE FOR POLICY STUDIES

Whilst the wealth of the very wealthy has increased through the pandemic, the CPS wants to prevent future tax rises and calls for sacking 160000 public sector workers, sell off valuable council houses to replace with cheap ones, cut child benefit, cut overseas aid, cut pensions. It is like some horror movie that these people (who I would guess are public school educated, or at least privileged with steady protected incomes) can sit around and work out how to screw more money from the poorest in our society. Do they practise cackling as well?

POLITICS

Andy Burnham stands up for the people of Manchester. But the government refuses to fund lockdown properly. They obviously don’t have mates in the area to chuck money at! And they are spending £7 rebranding the Highways Agency!

COVID-19

Johnson uses Brexit negotiating tactics in Manchester and is shocked they do not work! To call them negotiations is wrong – their stance is agree with us because we are always right! It maybe that he and his acolytes are more dangerous than the virus itself! I have people say ‘why not use the Nightingale hospitals”, then other hospitals could treat all the other patients. Well, the Tory government has run down the NHS for 10 years and there are not enough nurses and doctors. This time last year all the talk was about staffing shortages – this is still true.

COVID RAMBLINGS

I went back mentally to basics. Covid is a virus transmitted from person to person. If a person with Covid does not meet anyone else the virus cannot find another host. So that is simple. BUT people are gregarious, and need to be. Especially the young. Test and trace is a huge shambles.

USA ELECTION

There are many things I do not understand! The American electoral system is one of the major ones (along with anything science!). last time Clinton got 3 million more votes than Trump and lost. Ok similar things happen in the UK. But it is like their system is built to deceive. Created in the 18th and 19th centuries it resembles the ‘rotten boroughs’ of Georgian England.

MR JOHNSON IS A **** (why does clown have 5 letters?)

The moment he had been waiting for. Forget this Covid-19 distraction. Brexit he could wax lyrical about, and it would be at least 3 months before his bullshit is found out! With 95% of business people declaring that the economy would dive with a no-deal Brexit, everything was fitting into place. The drop in the economy would be hidden by Covid-19 impacts and mesmeric speeches about freedom and opportunities would rule – right? He could become popular again (if he had not been sacked by his own party by then). Maybe he could organise a shut down to end on Dec 31 and thus extol his brilliance. Maybe Dom could organise, and have a word with the people at the Met Office – snow over xmas and melting for the new year would be great, oh, and then a freeze so pictures of thousands of lorries in Kent could be blamed on the weather.

Just thinking – where would British politicians like Johnson, Gove, Rees-Mogg, etc. go into exile? USA under Trump, maybe Australia but they are still too democratic, I reckon China. No silly, they could dos with Branson in the Caribbean!
