COVID

Where are we now? In the UK numbers remain high at the 500-600 level, and the NHS is coping – just. The government and indeed all of us are hoping that the high levels we have had since opening up society without precautions will have given us some sort of herd immunity. Even though that concept seems to have been discarded as a fallacy 18 months ago.

RACISM

Unfortunately what I call passive racism is ingrained in out society. Many people would declare tat they were not racist at the same time as using offensive ‘banter’. Until we confront our history we will be blighted by the virus of racism. Of course statues to the murderers of the past should be moved, the National Trust should declare where the huge wealth that enabled our stately homes to be built comes from. Perhaps too many in the wealthy echelons of society still reap benefits from the gross abuse of the poor.

ALBANIA

Priti Patel and Dominic Raab state that asylum seekers will be sent to Albania. However this is denied by Albania’s Foreign Minister (a woman not a man – The Times please note) and its ambassador to the UK. So all ministers now feel free to join in the bullshit! It is so sad that they put more time and effort into appeasing rightwing nutters than the problem itself.

WATERGATE UK STYLE

An industry is privatised, although there can be no competition, and investors guaranteed above inflation dividends. The supposed watchdog turns a blind eye to lack of proper investment. So in the last 11 years investors have received £11.9 billion in dividends.

SPIN

Yet another U turn. With the spin that it actually a better deal than the original even if it is virtually the same pledge the tories scrapped 5 years ago.

GETTING IT DONE

Brexit – a fantastic deal, but now one which they say they only agreed because they would change it later! Covid contracts for tens of £ billions. Vaccines were rolled out with massive support from volunteers. Actually these are the only 2 things the government can claim to have got done. And Brexit will be paid by everyone of us for the foreseeable future. And I really hope that the huge efforts that created a Northern Ireland Settlement are not sacrificed on the Brexit altar.

WEATHER

British Columbia, Canada gets hit by more extreme weather. Extreme rainfall this time – I have not seen reports saying how the fires my have increased the amount of runoff and flooding.

SLEAZE

I find this governments incompetence hard to understand. Having made a fool of himself, yet again, he tries to put through a change that will affect less than 10 MP’s regarding second jobs. He had an opportunity to say that he got the Patterson case wrong but now was going to show leadership with new rules to re-establish public confidence in the legislature. Instead of which there is a wishy washy statement which basically states that second jobs and lobbying is ok, as long as the time spent doing it is hidden. Most of these ‘jobs’ are undefinable by time – no tachograph on a computer to measure zoom meetings or email exchanges.
